In my neighborhood, midnight brought the sound of fireworks and gunshots. Our neighbor stood in his back yard pointing a semiautomatic pistol in the air and firing rounds. Flashes of orange surrounded the barrel as the bullets zoomed upward. To fall…where?
What is it about ushering in the New Year that brings out the stupidity in humans? I remember when celebrating a new year consisted of blowing party horns, while dancing and wearing a paper hat decorated with glitter. Kissing your loved one, laughing, rejoicing that a new year meant new beginnings.
Perhaps my ancestors reflected on “remember when” and shook their heads as midnight arrived.
No matter what, a new year is here. A year that has seen many changes over years past. Some good, some bad. One thing I’ve learned is to look forward, not backward. The past cannot be changed. Only the future remains an open slate. One on which we write history for future generations.
My plan for 2013 is to approach each day with a smile, giving thanks to the Lord for all the blessings He provides. I don’t make resolutions, but I do set goals. Measurable goals with attached accountability. And I pray for God’s direction in meeting said goals, remembering all I can control is the way I approach each new day, each new challenge.
I wish you all a happy and prosperous year, one filled with wonderful blessings.Your attitude is what will determine your happiness, not the attitude of others. A winning smile, a helping hand, and a willing heart can bring joy into your day.
Happy New Year!!
