Each day brings new insight into this new phase of widowhood, and I’m reminded that everything happens in God’s time, not mine. As I wrote the second book in the Havens Creek series, the title kept eluding me. Several came to mind, but nothing stuck.
After finishing the book, I decided to title it, “Becca’s Heart.” The book cover and title were revealed on Facebook and on my website here. But two days later, during the editing process, a realization struck. This was not Becca’s story. It was Chase’s story and he wasn’t going to let me get away with a cover and title focusing on Becca.
Readers of the first book in the series, TRAPPED, encouraged me to write a happily ever after for Becca, who was a prominent secondary character in the story. I thought she deserved something good to happen in her life, so I ran with the idea of writing her story.
During the immediate years after the release of TRAPPED, my life turned in a different direction, focusing on family and my husband’s health. Becca’s story had to wait. This year, with the acceptance of widowhood, my focus once again turned to writing. I finished the story and designed a book cover ready to let the world know Becca had found happiness.
Being a writer, one has to remain flexible. Becca did get a happy ending (not giving away anything because all my readers know my stories end happily), but the story revolves around Chase and how his life is changed through the tragic event of his sister’s death and becoming guardian of his four-year-old twin nieces.
Here’s where flexibility became critical. The search was on for a perfect cover. Hours later, with my eyes crossed, I decided to search sites of professionals who made cover art their trade. I stumbled upon Book Covers Galore and the wonderful talent of Melissa Alvarez. She designed the perfect cover for the book which received a brand new title as well.
I’m not afraid to admit when I make mistakes. Readers need to know I’m human. I’m not a machine; I’m far from perfect. I failed to pray about the book cover and title and strayed in a wrong direction…but God brought me back on track. He is the one who needed top billing in the title!
IN GOD’S TIME is in the final editing stages and will be released in May 2014. See, not only did I learn this book would be finished in God’s Time, but also that He orchestrates our lives in every way…just as He did for Chase and Becca.
